So often people jump to radiation, chemotherapy, and/or surgery because that is what society has conditioned us to believe is best. Natural medicine, eating properly, and getting the right needs for your body can also help to combat cancer without hurting your immune system. Here we will discuss natural options that we have found beneficial and that you might want to consider looking into. ***Please note, this is purely personal reflection, our own research, and recommendations by professional naturopaths of natural treatment that may work for us. Not everything here will work for you, and some things may have adverse affects depending on your treatment, please consult a physician and a naturopath before taking any supplements and vitamins***
Proper nutrition should be a huge part of your battle against cancer. Cancer feeds on sugar, mucus, and thrive in an acidic environment. Replace sugar (and sugar substitutes) with small amounts of natural sugar such as honey or stevia. Replace regular table salt with sea salt. Cut down on milk and dairy to reduce mucus. Avoid red meats, which have high acidic content. Meat also contains growth hormones that can negatively affect the balance of the body, particularly for people with cancer. When buying meat, if possible, purchase organic, free-range, hormone free products – while it may be more expensive, the health benefits are important.Avoid processed and convenience foods. Non-organic foods are likely to be high in pesticides or growth hormones.
There is much research that suggests cancer cannot thrive in an alkaline environment. Practicing an alkaline diet can help to increase your immune system which helps to fight cancer. I recommend buying a book that will list each food and how acidic or alkaline it is. This is important because some foods you might think are alkaline are actually acidic. Personally, we have used “The Acid – Alkaline Food Guide: A Quick Reference to Foods and Their Effect on pH Levels” by Dr. Susan E. Brown and Larry Trivieri Jr. You can determine your pH level at home by purchasing pH test strips from your local drug store. Often you can also find them at the grocery store or Walmart – follow the simple instructions to reveal your pH levels.
Vitamins and Supplements
Vitamins and supplements can help your body to get what it needs on a regular basis, but also during cancer treatment. Think of these as that extra boost your immune system can use to kick cancers butt! The only thing is, there are so many vitamins and supplements how do you know which ones to take? Visiting your local naturopath, often at a health food store, can help to determine which supplements might be beneficial to you. Of course, everyone is different, so the process can take some time and might be a bit of a trial and error experiment. Keeping in mind, that natural treatment often takes a bit longer to see results, however, once they start to become effective they can be as effective as medications. After returning from Oasis of Hope, my mom was taking up to 70 supplements and vitamins a day. Here are a few of the ones we found particularly helpful.
Vitamine C: Taken by high dose intravenous can actually cause damage to cancer cells while being beneficial to healthy cells. As a powerful anti-oxident, Vitamin C generates large levels of hydrogen peroxide which is lethal to tumours. Read more here: http://www.oasisofhope.com/vitamin-c.php
Vitamin D: The physical product of sunlight transformed in the bodies of all mammals. Vitamin D helps with absorption of calcium in bones (particularly important for individuals with bone cancer or metastases), develops muscle strength, increases health of skin and nervous system, and assists with the proper functioning of the immune system. “The Fourfold Path to Healing: Working with the Laws of Nutrition, Therapeutics, Movement and Meditation in the Art of Medicine” by Thomas S. Iscador: The extract from mistletoe has been recommended to us by naturopaths and supposedly has many benefits for fighting cancer. However, it should be noted that this is a special kind of mistletoe and should be approved by a naturopath prior to use. “The Fourfold Path to Healing: Working with the Laws of Nutrition, Therapeutics, Movement and Meditation in the Art of Medicine” by Thomas S. Melatonin: A supplement that can be taken in liquid or pill form to help assist with sleep. Sleep is an important part of the heeling process. Although it may seem like the individual is always tired, trouble sleeping at night can often occur do to changing sleep schedules, pain, etc. It is important that the individual gets the rest they need during the day as well as at night. Melatonin will help relax nerves, muscles, and encourage sleep. “The Fourfold Path to Healing: Working with the Laws of Nutrition, Therapeutics, Movement and Meditation in the Art of Medicine” by Thomas S.
