How The Sun Sees You

It might be relaxing to laze in the warm sun, spending the day getting a tan (or in my case, often a burn), but what are the effects the sun has on our skin? This video shows a glimpse of not-yet visible changes to our skin when individuals step under an ultra violent light.

Stay beautiful, stay safe, protect your skin.

A healthy ice cream alternative for summer that will leave you wanting more!

When faced with cancer, one of the most important aspects of recovery that is so often overlooked is our diet. We need to be aware of what we are putting into our bodies but that doesn’t mean we don’t still get cravings for something sweet. For cancer, sugar is a BIG no, no, as it feeds the cancerous cells and helps it to grow. While natural sugars should still be limited, they can supplement processed sugars in small doses, and taste just as delicious.

In the summer months, we often crave a cool treat. Ice cream, frozen yogurt, and popsicles that are high in sugar are not the best option for individuals battling cancer. A healthy option? Yonanas is great for anyone who is looking for a healthy dessert option! The best part about it? All you need is frozen fruit! I know you might seem skeptical about this at first, I know I was. Where does that ice creamy texture come from when there’s only fruit in there? The frozen banana makes the texture more like ice cream. If you don’t use a banana your going to get something more like frozen yogurt or sorbet – equally tasty if you ask me, it just depends what you’re in the mood for! You can add in other things like chocolate chips or get creative and freeze vanilla, really, your options are quite limitless.

Biodegradable Urns

“Turn Cemeteries into Forests”

Today we will plant, yes, plant, my Moms ashes in a biodegradable urn that holds a seed that will eventually grow into a tree. As one website claims, “There is life, after life.” The ashes help to fertilize the tree, and so a part of my Mom will literally reside there for the duration of the trees life. After the tree dies and returns to the earth, there is potential to continue the cycle by planting in the same spot. My family and I thought this was a beautiful way to continue to celebrate the wonderful person my Mom was and the life that she lived. We decided to plant the tree at our cottage, one of her favourite places to spend time with family and friends. There are a few places to purchase Biodegradable Tree Urns, which are cost effective and eco-friendly, we received ours directly from the funeral home. However, if the funeral home you are working with to plan your loved ones funeral does not offer this, you can order an urn here: On the website, and with the funeral home, we had options of the tree we wanted to plant, because of course, you need to be conscious of the soil and growing conditions for your tree to thrive. Since our cottage is on the river across from the beach and has sandy soil, we chose an Oak tree. Beautiful and resilient this tree will represent my Mom and mark her final resting place.

There are also biodegradable water urns, that will float temporarily to allow for a final farewell before sinking into the river, lake, sea, or ocean. This is another eco-friendly way to recognize someone who loved to be by the water, fish, or sail. Here is a link for more information:

Oasis of Hope

In December 2013, my parents travelled to Oasis of Hope in Tijuana, Mexico. Oasis of Hope is an alternative cancer treatment centre that works one on one with patients to find the best options for treating and potentially reversing cancer. The program focuses on all aspects of your recovery including mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.  Emphasis is placed on educating patients and their partners on how to fight cancer naturally by boosting the immune system though supplements and proper nutrition. Medical advancements are used to speed this process along, a couple examples include high dose vitamin C by intravenous and oxidization therapies.

According to their website there are four reasons why Oasis of Hope is your best cancer treatment option:

  1. Oasis of Hope has better survival rates than any other cancer treatment center in the world.
  2. Dr. Contreras is the world’s leading authority in integrative and alternative cancer treatment.
  3. Oasis does not get you sick to get you better.
  4. Lose the cancer, not the hair.

My mom still has all her hair, she felt way better after the Oasis treatment, and Dr. Contreras and his team personally created a plan of attack to combat the cancer head on.

If Oasis of Hope isn’t a feasible option for you or your family, there are similar treatments that can be done close to home or even DIY options. I will discuss some of these options in later posts.
